My name is Evelyn Morales. I am a single mom living with my mother. I have a son, who is currently attending Head Start. The Head Start Program has proven to be an empowering program which ensures the well-being of the family. I was very concerned about my son’s speech. During my home visit, I mentioned my concern to the staff. The staff sat down with me and explained to me that they could get a referral so that he could get an evaluation from Early Childhood Special Education Program, so my son got referred. Unfortunately, Early Childhood Special Education Program could not do an evaluation because he failed his vision screening. I was told that I needed to take him to the vision doctor before they could do an evaluation. I was very disappointed because I knew I was not able to afford the exam or glasses if needed. My son did not qualify for Medicaid because he recently migrated to the United States. The Head Start Program helped me with the resources to obtain his vision exam and glasses. I am very grateful to the Head Start Program for helping my son get his glasses. He has now completed the Early Childhood Special Education Program evaluation. I hope Head Start continues helping other families as they have helped me.
